Members of the Fence Club will this weekend continue the tradition of the Chairman’s Charity Challenge, embarking upon a fundraising walk that follows a historic military campaign in the Netherlands.
Eighteen walkers made up of Fence Club Chairman Derek Scott, Past Chairmen, Wall members, and friends and family, will complete the route from Nijmegen Bridge to Arnhem (John Frost) Bridge tomorrow, Saturday 16 August.
“As with all fundraisers the walkers will be there at their own expense to raise funds for chosen children’s charities. If you can donate it would be very much appreciated by The Fence Club, and by the many children that will benefit”
Their path will follow in the footsteps of allied WW2 soldiers who operated in the area during Operation Market Garden, a failed 1944 operation designed to break the back of Axis forces and bring about an early end to the conflict. Their aim was to capture three key bridges – Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem – to create a corridor into Germany.
On Sunday, the intrepid walkers will walk a circuitous route around Arnhem taking in historic places and museums, including a stop at the Arnhem War Cemetery to pay their respects. The actual campaign to take these bridges took place only six years before the formation of the Fence Club in 1950, making this the club’s 75th year.
As with all fundraisers the walkers will be there at their own expense to raise funds for chosen children’s charities. If you can donate it would be very much appreciated by The Fence Club, and by the many children that will benefit.
Donations are encouraged and can be made via www.justgiving.com/charity/fenceclub.
Remember to add gift aid and also put your name and note ‘Arnhem’ in the comments column so the Fence Club knows what it’s for and who it’s from. The Fence Club extends its thanks on behalf of Chairman Derek, the walkers, and of course the children.
