Disney debuts Moana live-action trailer 

Dwayne Johnson returns as demigod Maui in a live-action remake of the 2016 animated hit 

Disney has given fans a new look at the live-action remake of Moana, with Dwayne Johnson returning as demigod Maui, and Catherine Laga’aia starring as the titular hero. 

In the film, which follows the same story as the 2016 animation, Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people. 

Moana releases in cinemas 10 July 2026.

The remake is directed by Thomas Kail, the Emmy and Tony Award-winning  director of Hamilton, and is produced by star Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The movie is executive produced by Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated Moana films.
